If there is adequate drainage and is not compacted, use a layer of 10 to 15 sheets of newspaper in place of the sand.

Garden bed soil layers. Repeat with more layers of each, mix. The particular plants you are putting in the flower bed will need the proper conditions and soil for it to thrive. With that, the bed may only be about quarter full.

For example, add several inches of bulk soil or bagged soil, a good layer of compost, a couple inches of volcanic rock, and mix. Cover this with geotextile or weed matting and make sure you pull it up the sides and over the top to cover those sharp edges. Also known as 'lasagne gardening' or 'sheet mulching,' this will help create healthy, fertile soil that drains well and is adequately aerated (plants need air in the soil to thrive).

This mostly comes down to a choice between garden soil uses or topsoil uses. Not formulated for planting, topsoil is used to fill or level holes or other depressions in the ground. Layering soil in a raised garden bed.

Straw mulch works well in the heat and works well in the cold. It is loose and fluffy filled with air that plant roots need and has plenty of nutrients and minerals essential for vigorous plant growth and bountiful yields. But best of all, lasagna gardening reduces the overall cost of filling each bed with pricey bags of gardening soil and instead lets me use items that my yard has already provided in abundance like cheap newspapers that get chucked onto my front lawn, pine straw, and mulch from tree removal earlier this year.

The most popular way to fill a raised garden bed is to layer it with a combination of soil organic materials, including hay, compost and manure. Raised bed soil is specially blended for growing fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers in outdoor planting beds. Your sheet mulch bed is complete.

If you want to create a raised bed in the space, add sturdy boards around your layers. Additional soil than what your yard is currently providing is sometimes necessary for your new flower bed. Heres how i did it:

Leaves and grass clippings are great bulk organic materials which can be layered into the lower regions of tall raised beds, where they will slowly compost over time into rich soil. It eventually disintegrates and becomes part of your soil layers. Aim for two parts shredded leaves to one part grass clippings.

Line the bottom with thick layers of newspaper or cardboard. Designed for use in raised beds that sit on top of native soil, raised bed mix is somewhere between bagged potting mix and garden soil in terms of its composition. For a finished edge, ring your lasagna garden with stones or bricks.

In the natural process of soil development, distinct layers, called soil horizons , develop, where the most fertile soil is closest to the top. Continue this process until the bed is full. Soil uses are going to be your main concern.

Then layers of organic materials are added on top, such as grass clippings, hay, straw, leaves, manure, compost, and finally top soil. This mix is ideal for succulents. The top of the lasagna garden for us is always a beautiful bed of straw mulch.

Let the bed sit until layers have broken down again, this can take several months, so feel free to keep checking in on the status.when the soil is loose and crumbles in your hand, you are ready.

Water the whole bed thoroughly once again. Hugel beds start with a base of logs, branches, and twigs. As the materials decompose, they'll shrink down quite a bit.
